The World of Little League Museum® has been awarded a $4,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) as part of nearly $2 million in funding to 158 eligible museums across 58 Pennsylvania counties.

“We are honored to once again receive this generous grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as we continue to find ways to enhance our Museum and bring fun, educational, and memorable experiences to all our guests that visit throughout the year,” said Adam Thompson, Director of the World of Little League Museum. “For decades, our Museum has brought the story of Little League to life in unique and interactive ways and has served as an important piece of history for not only Williamsport but the entire state of Pennsylvania. We are thankful to once again receive this funding and for the ongoing support of the PHMC and all of the other museums across the state.”

The goal of the Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is to strengthen Pennsylvania’s museum community by supporting the general operations of eligible museums and official county historical societies that are not supported by other state agency funding programs. The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Featuring exhibits and artifacts for visitors of all ages, the World of Little League Museum is open Thursdays through Mondays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET. Additionally, groups are welcome to schedule private tours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the year by emailing Museum@LittleLeague.org. New Exhibits Highlighting AU Softball, Tom Seaver Now Available in the World of Little League® Museum

Continuing to celebrate the wins and experiences of Little League® graduates, the World of Little League® Museum has officially opened two new exhibits: the Athletes Unlimited Pro Games Exhibit and the Tom Seaver Little League Legacy Exhibit.

The Athletes Unlimited Pro Games Exhibit

Highlighting the impact of the Athletes Unlimited (AU) and Little League partnership, this exhibit features multiple artifacts from the first-ever Athletes Unlimited Pro Games, played during the 2023 Little League Softball® World Series in Greenville, North Carolina.

The exhibit features tickets from the games, a softball that was used in the first game of the doubleheader, and Team Alexander’s dugout lineup card from the second game, signed by captain Odicci Alexander.

“Our goal is to update the museum frequently to highlight memorable events within the program. The Athletes Unlimited Pro Games held during this year’s Little League Softball World Series were undoubtedly special for the players and fans in Greenville,” said Adam Thompson, Director of the World of Little League Museum. “We are excited to showcase the artifacts from those games, continue highlighting our softball program, and ensure it is represented in our museum.”

Also in the case, in celebration of a former Little Leaguer now playing professionally with AU, the exhibit also features a signed Kathryn Sandercock jersey. A graduate of McLean (Va.) Little League, Ms. Sandercock played in the 2013 Little League Softball World Series (LLSWS) and continued her career playing at the collegiate level as a Florida State Seminole before being the fourth overall pick in the 2023 AU Softball College Draft. In the 2023 AU Pro Games, Ms. Sandercock played for Team Alexander and wore the purple jersey now showcased in the exhibit.

The Athletes Unlimited Pro Games Exhibit was added to the World of Little League Museum just in time for Little League’s launch of the “Girls with Game 50” Campaign, celebrating 50 years of female inclusion and the 50th anniversary of the first-ever Little League Softball World Series in 2024. The exhibit can be found between the Second and Third Innings of the Museum’s six-inning structure.

The Tom Seaver Little League Legacy Exhibit

The Tom Seaver Little League Legacy Exhibit

In 1988, Little League selected 12-time MLB All-Star Tom Seaver as the first inductee into the Little League Hall of Excellence, the greatest honor Little League can bestow. Now, 35 years later, Little League continues to honor the charter member with a new legacy exhibit.

Mr. Seaver was one of Major League Baseball’s most accomplished pitchers, earning him the nicknames of “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise,” after he helped the New York Mets win their first World Series title in 1969. Highlighting this accomplishment, the exhibit features a patch sold by the Mets in 2021, with the proceeds going to the World of Little League Museum. The exhibit also displays a hat Mr. Seaver wore during his days on the fields of the Spartan Little League in Fresno, California.

Tom Seaver #41 Patch sold by the New York Mets in 2021

In 2021, due to the impacts of COVID-19, the Little League Baseball World Series featured only U.S. Teams. The 16 teams were split into two brackets, both named after Hall of Famers who embodied the mission of the Little League program during their careers, Hank Aaron and Mr. Seaver. Mr. Aaron passed away in January 2021 and Mr. Seaver passed in August 2020.

“Tom Seaver was a long-time friend and supporter of the museum. The exhibit will continue to honor his legacy and celebrate professional athletes who got their start on the Little League diamond.” said Mr. Thompson.

Like other exhibits in the museum, the new exhibit will also have an interactive feature. Guests will be able to operate a touch screen mounted onto the exhibit to learn more about notable athletes from all professional sports, including Patrick Mahomes, NFL quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Sydney Leroux, soccer player with Angel City FC and Olympic Gold Medalist for the U.S. Women’s National Team.

The exhibit was made possible through the generous support of the Seaver Family, New York Mets, and Baseball Hall of Fame members, Hank Aaron, Ted Simmons, Tony La Russa, Tom Glavine, Willie Mays, the Doug Harvey estate, and the chairman of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Jane Forbes Clark.

The Museum was previously closed in January and February for minor renovations to its Official Store, as well as updates to select displays and exhibits throughout the Museum.

“With the official kickoff to spring on March 21, and families beginning to make their plans for the summer months, we are thrilled to be able to reopen our doors and welcome visitors from all around the world into our museum,” said Adam Thompson, Director of the World of Little League Museum. “The past few months have allowed us to move around some exhibit items and displays throughout the Museum, which will better showcase our program’s history, while also providing some minor upgrades to our store area to enhance the customer experience. We look forward to an exciting spring season and encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the offerings of the World of Little League Museum, whether it be for the first time or the hundredth time.”

Located at the top of the Little League® International Complex, home of the Little League Baseball® World Series, the World of Little League Museum is an immersive experience that brings visitors of all ages through the history, memories, and experience that Little League has provided to families all around the world each year. In addition to the offerings within the Museum, visitors are also encouraged to explore the Little League International Complex and take part in an audio-guided walking tour before ending the day at either the Little League Main Gift Shop or the Museum’s Official Store to take home a souvenir.

MLB Hall of Fame

The Baseball Hall of Fame will see two inductees earn their plaques in Cooperstown this summer, both of whom got their starts on Little League® fields growing up. Scott Rolen, a graduate of Jasper (Ind.) National Little League, will join Fred McGriff of Forest Heights Little League (Tampa, Fla.) and West Tampa (Fla.) Little League as the two players to earn the biggest honor in the game as the Class of 2023.

Including the two members of this year’s class, there have been a total of 34 Little League graduates to go on to become National Baseball Hall of Famers. Of those 34, seven graduates have also been enshrined into the Little League Hall of Excellence, the highest honor that Little League can bestow.

Little League Alumni

Fred McGriff – Forest Heights Little League & West Tampa Little League (Tampa, Fla.)

Unanimously elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee on Dec. 4, receiving all 16 possible votes, Fred McGriff enjoyed 19 major league seasons with the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Devil Rays, Cubs, and Dodgers during his MLB career. After being drafted in the ninth round of the 1981 amateur draft by the New York Yankees, Mr. McGriff finished his MLB career just seven homers short of the 500-home run club, tied with Lou Gehrig for 26th all-time. He had a career .284 batting average, 2,490 hits, 441 doubles, and 1,550 RBI. He and fellow Little League graduate, Gary Sheffield, are the only players to hit 30 home runs for five different major league teams. In 10 postseason series, Mr. McGriff batted .303 with 10 home runs, 37 RBI and 100 total bases. He was named to five All-Star Games, finished in the top 10 in MVP voting six times, and ranks 47th all-time in RBI with 1,550.

Scott Rolen – Jasper (Ind.) National Little League

After 17 seasons as a standout third baseman for the Phillies, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Reds, Scott Rolen has earned his iconic bronze plaque with a 76.3% vote in his sixth year on the ballot. A two-sport athlete playing baseball and basketball as a kid, Mr. Rolen committed to play basketball at the University of Georgia, but after the Philadelphia Phillies selected him in the second round of the 1993 MLB Draft, he elected to sign and play professional baseball instead. Notably known for the way in which he played the game, Mr. Rolen closed out his 17-year career with a .281 batting average, 316 home runs, 2,077 hits, and 1,287 RBI. He was an eight-time Gold Glove Award winner and seven-time All-Star and earned a NL Silver Slugger Award in 2002.

Joining Mr. McGriff and Mr. Rolen on July 21-24 for Hall of Fame Weekend 2023 will be John Lowe and Pat Hughes, who will be honored with the BBWAA Career Excellence Award and the Ford C. Frick Award, respectively. To learn more, visit BaseballHall.org.
